The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud-A Bird's eye view

Summary: Production of Silver Cloud Series was started in the year 1955 and the last unit of this series was manufactured in 1966. During these 11 years, Rolls-Royce launched three series of Silver Cloud. Every series had different models and different specifications. Though, Silver Cloud II was the highest selling series among the three, other two were equally appreciated by customers and critics. In the initial period, Rolls-Royce put emphasis on strength and performance. In the later versions, interior and exterior design were also given due priority along with the power of Engine and performance. Still now, models belonging to Silver Cloud series are an irresistible attraction for vintage car lovers.

From April 1955 till the end of March 1966, Silver Cloud was the core and highest selling model of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. In 1966, eminent automobile designer J. P. Blatchley added some significant changes to the model silver cloud and it was replaced with a new model Silver dawn. Three generations of Silver cloud models were available between the time period of 1955 and 1966. Silver Cloud I was the first model of this generation and Silver Cloud III was the last. In this article we will discuss about the features of all these three generations of Silver cloud in detail.

Specifications of Silver Cloud I

Launched in the year 1955, Silver Cloud I ruled over the roads till 1959. Having a 4.9 L I6 engine, this model had the dimension of 212X74.75X64 inches. Most of the features of this model can be compared to that of Bentley S1. If you analyze the overall look and design of the car, you will find simplicity and sticking to the conventional designs were the predominant factors. In the chassis of the car, a steel box section was welded to offer rigidity to the Chassis. Transmission of this car was automatic and four-speed. However, the safety measures infused in this model are praise worthy. It had hydraulic brakes, mechanical servo and excellent suspension capacity. In the year 1956, power braking and air conditioning facilities were added to the model.

Specifications of Silver Cloud II

Production of this generation of Silver Cloud started in the year 1959 and continued up to 1962. Silver Cloud II was available in three models. They were 4-door saloon models, 2-door models having convertibility capacity and 2-door coupé. For the first time in the history of Rolls-Royce, 6.2lV8 engines were installed in the models of this series. Models of this series had the dimension of 213X74.75X64 inches. This model used a comparatively shorter wheel base than the series I. As far as exterior is concerned, you cannot mark a significant difference between Series I and series II. However, due to enhanced engine specifications, the performance of the models improved a lot. In the years 1961, interior of Silver Cloud Series II models were changed. Blue instrument lighting was incorporated in this year. Other interior changes were warming light for hand brake and a switch for headlamp Flasher.

Specification of Silver Cloud Series III

Launched in the year 1963, models of Silver Cloud III series had several similarities with Bentley S3. Three models of this series were launched in the market. They were four-door saloon models, convertible models having 2-door facility and two-door Coupe. 6.2l V8 engine was also used in all the three models of Silver Cloud III series. Compared to the predecessor series, Silver Cloud’s design witnessed several changes. Some of them are squeezed external dimension, improved interior, reduction of overall weight of the car, and modifications to different accessories related to engine.

To conclude, if we take sales statistics into count, series II was the most successful model among the three. 2582 units of this series were manufactured and sold.
